Easter

Although in secular society Christmas gets more commercial attention, Easter is in fact the most important festival in the Christian calendar. When we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Day, we mark the festival on which, by the Bible's own admission, the Christian faith stands or falls (1 Corinthians 15:14).

At Ridgeway Methodist Church, Easter celebrations include four main services and other activities alongside them, particularly activities for children. Our Easter programme begins with an evening service on Maundy Thursday, the day on which we mark the Last Supper and the arrest of Jesus. This service includes Holy Communion. Our second Easter service takes place on the morning of Good Friday, when we mark the crucifixion of Jesus.

In recent years we have often shown a film on the evening of Good Friday to which the whole local community is invited. In 2004 we showed the 'Jesus' video, and in 2005 the award-winning animated film 'The Miracle Maker'. These films give people who may be reluctant to come to a service the opportunity to find out more about Jesus and the Christian festival of Easter. On Good Friday 2006, as part of our outreach programme, we arranged a Mystery Tour around the villages of south-east Cornwall and ending at Millbrook Methodist Church. 2007 saw a similar event running along the Tamar Valley and ending at Wolsdon House, Antony. Photos from the 2006 and 2007 events can be seen on the outreach photo gallery.

On Easter Day itself we have our usual two Sunday services, with Holy Communion taking place during the morning service. Our Easter programme is sometimes supplemented with a holiday club for children, as with other school holidays. More information about these clubs is available on the Youth Activities page.
